Choir! Choir! Choir! Fairfax Concert reviews
Rod and Stevie together alone
Opening with the great Sam Cooke's Havin a Party was genius and sets a great mood. Joining me is my lovely wife who loves Rod (our song in the late 70's was Tonites the night). I missed Every Picture Tells a Story but on this night the picture was a confident virtuoso and a voice as good as ever. There was a nice mix of his soulful songs: You're in my heart, Cat's 1st Cut, Van's, Have I told you and Tim H's, Reason to Believe. And the ladies did a terrific Proud Mary, Tina style, which brought back to me memories of her opening for the Stones in the same venue many moons ago. My reason for 4 stars and not 5 was the use of Stevie. I would have loved to see him join her set on Draggin or Leather and Lace. No complaints and of course a dip into disco/rock Hot Legs, Do ya think i'm sexy are still fun songs. And a real nice mention of Tom Waits for his Downtown Train. But all in all hearing the band Chuck Berry out on Sweet Little R & Rer and a terrific Love Train nice choice. Having seen Rod at many stages of his long career beginning Jeff Beck group at the Singer Bowl NYC very early 70's, this was a command performance. She seemed out of place on Passions and Young Turks often alone and very little chemistry between them, more like a guest rather than a touring partner. I love when artists acknowledge their peers and Rod has always been very classy.
